  1. EL3 SPMC Threat Model
  2. *********************
  3. ************
  4. Introduction
  5. ************
  6. This document provides a threat model for the TF-A :ref:`EL3 Secure Partition Manager`
  7. (EL3 SPM) implementation. The EL3 SPM implementation is based on the
  8. `Arm Firmware Framework for Arm A-profile`_ specification.
  9. ********************
  10. Target of Evaluation
  11. ********************
  12. In this threat model, the target of evaluation is the ``Secure Partition Manager Core``
  13. component (SPMC) within the EL3 firmware.
  14. The monitor and SPMD at EL3 are covered by the :ref:`Generic TF-A threat model
  15. <threat_analysis>`.
  16. The scope for this threat model is:
  17. - The TF-A implementation for the EL3 SPMC
  18. - The implementation complies with the FF-A v1.1 specification.
  19. - Secure partition is statically provisioned at boot time.
  20. - Focus on the run-time part of the life-cycle (no specific emphasis on boot
  21. time, factory firmware provisioning, firmware udpate etc.)
  22. - Not covering advanced or invasive physical attacks such as decapsulation,
  23. FIB etc.
  24. Data Flow Diagram
  25. =================
  26. Figure 1 shows a high-level data flow diagram for the SPM split into an SPMD
  27. and SPMC component at EL3. The SPMD mostly acts as a relayer/pass-through between
  28. the normal world and the secure world. It is assumed to expose small attack surface.
  29. A description of each diagram element is given in Table 1. In the diagram, the
  30. red broken lines indicate trust boundaries.
  31. Components outside of the broken lines are considered untrusted.

  59. Threat Analysis
  60. ***************
  61. This threat model follows a similar methodology to the :ref:`Generic TF-A threat model
  62. <threat_analysis>`. The following sections define:
  63. - Trust boundaries
  64. - Assets
  65. - Theat agents
  66. - Threat types
  67. Trust boundaries
  68. ================
  69. - Normal world is untrusted.
  70. - Secure world and normal world are separate trust boundaries.
  71. - EL3 monitor, SPMD and SPMC are trusted.
  72. - Bootloaders (in particular BL1/BL2 if using TF-A) and run-time BL31 are
  73. implicitely trusted by the usage of trusted boot.
  74. - EL3 monitor, SPMD, SPMC do not trust SPs.
  75. Assets
  76. ======
  77. The following assets are identified:
  78. - SPMC state.
  79. - SP state.
  80. - Information exchange between endpoints (partition messages).
  81. - SPMC secrets (e.g. pointer authentication key when enabled)
  82. - SP secrets (e.g. application keys).
  83. - Scheduling cycles.
  84. - Shared memory.
  85. Threat Agents
  86. =============
  87. The following threat agents are identified:
  88. - Non-secure endpoint (referred NS-Endpoint later): normal world client at
  89. NS-EL2 (Hypervisor) or NS-EL1 (VM or OS kernel).
  90. - Secure endpoint (referred as S-Endpoint later): typically a secure partition.
  91. - Hardware attacks (non-invasive) requiring a physical access to the device,
  92. such as bus probing or DRAM stress.
  93. Threat types
  94. ============
  95. The following threat categories as exposed in the :ref:`Generic TF-A threat model
  96. <threat_analysis>`
  97. are re-used:
  98. - Spoofing
  99. - Tampering
  100. - Repudiation
  101. - Information disclosure
  102. - Denial of service
  103. - Elevation of privileges
  104. Similarly this threat model re-uses the same threat risk ratings. The risk
  105. analysis is evaluated based on the environment being ``Server`` or ``Mobile``.
  106. IOT is not evaluated as the EL3 SPMC is primarily meant for use in Client.
  107. Threat Assessment
  108. =================
  109. The following threats are identified by applying STRIDE analysis on each diagram
  110. element of the data flow diagram.

  138. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  139. | Mitigations | Yes. |
  140. | implemented? | The SPMC enforces checks in the direct message |
  141. | | request/response interfaces such an endpoint cannot|
  142. | | spoof the origin and destination worlds (e.g. a NWd|
  143. | | originated message directed to the SWd cannot use a|
  144. | | SWd ID as the sender ID). |
  145. | | Also enforces check for direct response being sent |
  146. | | only to originator of request. |
  147. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  148. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  149. | ID | 02 |

  173. | Mitigations | Validate if endpoind has permission to send |
  174. | | request to other endpoint by implementation |
  175. | | defined means. |
  176. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  177. | Mitigations | Platform specific. |
  178. | implemented? | |
  179. | | The guidance below is left for a system integrator |
  180. | | to implement as necessary. |
  181. | | |
  182. | | Additionally a software component residing in the |
  183. | | SPMC can be added for the purpose of direct |
  184. | | request/response filtering. |
  185. | | |
  186. | | It can be configured with the list of known IDs |
  187. | | and about which interaction can occur between one |
  188. | | and another endpoint (e.g. which NWd endpoint ID |
  189. | | sends a direct request to which SWd endpoint ID). |
  190. | | |
  191. | | This component checks the sender/receiver fields |
  192. | | for a legitimate communication between endpoints. |
  193. | | |
  194. | | A similar component can exist in the OS kernel |
  195. | | driver, or Hypervisor although it remains untrusted|
  196. | | by the SPMD/SPMC. |
  197. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  198. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  199. | ID | 03 |
  200. +========================+====================================================+
  201. | Threat | **Tampering with memory shared between an endpoint |
  202. | | and the SPMC.** |
  203. | | |
  204. | | A malicious endpoint may attempt tampering with its|
  205. | | RX/TX buffer contents while the SPMC is processing |
  206. | | it (TOCTOU). |
  207. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  208. | Diagram Elements | DF1, DF3, DF7 |

  214. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  215. | Threat Agent | NS-Endpoint, S-Endpoint |
  216. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  217. | Threat Type | Tampering |
  218. +------------------------+--------------------------+-------------------------+
  219. | Application | Server | Mobile |

  225. | Total Risk Rating | High (16) | High (16) |
  226. +------------------------+--------------------------+-------------------------+
  227. | Mitigations | Validate all inputs, copy before use. |
  228. +------------------------+----------------------------------------------------+
  229. | Mitigations | Yes. In context of FF-A v1.1 this is the case of |
  230. | implemented? | sharing the RX/TX buffer pair and usage in the |
  231. | | PARTITION_INFO_GET or memory sharing primitives. |
  232. | | |
  233. | | The SPMC copies the contents of the TX buffer |
  234. | | to an internal temporary buffer before processing |
  235. | | its contents. The SPMC implements hardened input |
  236. | | validation on data transmitted through the TX |
  237. | | buffer by an untrusted endpoint. |
  238. | | |
  239. | | The TF-A SPMC enforces |
  240. | | checks on data transmitted through RX/TX buffers. |

  245. | Threat | **An endpoint may tamper with its own state or the |
  246. | | state of another endpoint.** |
  247. | | |
  248. | | A malicious endpoint may attempt violating: |
  249. | | |
  250. | | - its own or another SP state by using an unusual |
  251. | | combination (or out-of-order) FF-A function |
  252. | | invocations. |
  253. | | This can also be an endpoint emitting FF-A |
  254. | | function invocations to another endpoint while |
  255. | | the latter in not in a state to receive it (e.g. |
  256. | | SP sends a direct request to the normal world |
  257. | | early while the normal world is not booted yet). |
  258. | | - the SPMC state itself by employing unexpected |
  259. | | transitions in FF-A memory sharing, direct |
  260. | | requests and responses, or handling of interrupts|
  261. | | This can be led by random stimuli injection or |
  262. | | fuzzing. |

  294. | | |
  295. | | A malicious endpoint may replay a message exchange |
  296. | | that occurred between two legitimate endpoints as |
  297. | | a matter of triggering a malfunction or extracting |
  298. | | secrets from the receiving endpoint. In particular |
  299. | | the memory sharing operation with fragmented |
  300. | | messages between an endpoint and the SPMC may be |
  301. | | replayed by a malicious agent as a matter of |
  302. | | getting access or gaining permissions to a memory |
