  25. .TH CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE 3 "17 Jun 2014" libcurl libcurl
  26. .SH NAME
  27. CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE \- file name to read cookies from
  28. .SH SYNOPSIS
  29. .nf
  30. #include <curl/curl.h>
  31. CURLcode curl_easy_setopt(CURL *handle, CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE, char *filename);
  32. .fi
  33. .SH DESCRIPTION
  34. Pass a pointer to a null-terminated string as parameter. It should point to
  35. the file name of your file holding cookie data to read. The cookie data can be
  36. in either the old Netscape / Mozilla cookie data format or just regular HTTP
  37. headers (Set-Cookie style) dumped to a file.
  38. It also enables the cookie engine, making libcurl parse and send cookies on
  39. subsequent requests with this handle.
  40. By passing the empty string ("") to this option, you enable the cookie engine
  41. without reading any initial cookies. If you tell libcurl the file name is "-"
  42. (just a single minus sign), libcurl will instead read from stdin.
  43. This option only \fBreads\fP cookies. To make libcurl write cookies to file,
  44. see \fICURLOPT_COOKIEJAR(3)\fP.
  45. If you use the Set-Cookie file format and do not specify a domain then the
  46. cookie is not sent since the domain will never match. To address this, set a
  47. domain in Set-Cookie line (doing that will include sub-domains) or preferably:
  48. use the Netscape format.
  49. If you use this option multiple times, you just add more files to read.
  50. Subsequent files will add more cookies.
  51. The application does not have to keep the string around after setting this
  52. option.
  53. Setting this option to NULL will (since 7.77.0) explicitly disable the cookie
  54. engine and clear the list of files to read cookies from.
  55. .SH SECURITY
  56. This document previously mentioned how specifying a non-existing file can also
  57. enable the cookie engine. While true, we strongly advise against using that
  58. method as it is too hard to be sure what files will stay that way in the long
  59. run.
