151.
Background

 152.
Synapse uses a variety of third-party Python packages to function as a homeserver.
 153. Some of these are direct dependencies, listed in
pyproject.toml
under the
 154.
[tool.poetry.dependencies]
section. The rest are transitive dependencies (the
 155. things that our direct dependencies themselves depend on, and so on recursively.)

 156.
We maintain a locked list of all our dependencies (transitive included) so that
 157. we can track exactly which version of each dependency appears in a given release.
 158. See here
 159. for discussion of why we wanted this for Synapse. We chose to use
 160.
poetry
to manage this locked list; see
 161. this comment
 162. for the reasoning.

 163.
The locked dependencies get included in our "self-contained" releases: namely,
 164. our docker images and our debian packages. We also use the locked dependencies
 165. in development and our continuous integration.

 166.
Separately, our "broad" dependencies—the version ranges specified in
 167.
pyproject.toml
—are included as metadata in our "sdists" and "wheels" uploaded
 168. to PyPI. Installing from PyPI or from
 169. the Synapse source tree directly will not use the locked dependencies; instead,
 170. they'll pull in the latest version of each package available at install time.

 171.
Example dependency

 172.
An example may help. We have a broad dependency on
 173.
phonenumbers
, as declared in

 223.
Tooling recommendation: direnv

 224.

direnv
is a tool for activating environments in your
 225. shell inside a given directory. Its support for poetry is unofficial (a
 226. community wiki recipe only), but works solidly in our experience. We thoroughly
 227. recommend it for daily use. To use it:

 228.

 229.
Install
direnv
- it's likely
 230. packaged for your system already.

 231.
Teach direnv about poetry. The shell config here
 232. needs to be added to
~/.config/direnv/direnvrc
(or more generally
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/direnv/direnvrc
).

 233.
Mark the synapse checkout as a poetry project:
echo layout poetry > .envrc
.

 234.
Convince yourself that you trust this
.envrc
configuration and project.
 235. Then formally confirm this to
direnv
by running
direnv allow
.

 236.

 237.
Then whenever you navigate to the synapse checkout, you should be able to run
 238. e.g.
mypy
instead of
poetry run mypy
;
python
instead of
 239.
poetry run python
; and your shell commands will automatically run in the
 240. context of poetry's venv, without having to run
poetry shell
beforehand.

 241.
How do I...

 242.
...reset my venv to the locked environment?

 243.

poetry install --extras all --remove-untracked
 244.

 245.
...run a command in the
poetry
virtualenv?

 246.
Use
poetry run cmd args
when you need the python virtualenv context.
 247. To avoid typing
poetry run
all the time, you can run
poetry shell

 248. to start a new shell in the poetry virtualenv context. Within
poetry shell
,
 249.
python
,
pip
,
mypy
,
trial
, etc. are all run inside the project virtualenv
 250. and isolated from the rest o the system.

 251.
Roughly speaking, the translation from a traditional virtualenv is:

 252.

 253.

env/bin/activate
->
poetry shell
, and

 254.

deactivate
-> close the terminal (Ctrl-D,
exit
, etc.)

 255.

 256.
See also the direnv recommendation above, which makes
poetry run
and
 257.
poetry shell
unnecessary.

 258.
...inspect the
poetry
virtualenv?

 259.
Some suggestions:

 260.

# Current env only
 261. poetry env info
 262. # All envs: this allows you to have e.g. a poetry managed venv for Python 3.7,
 263. # and another for Python 3.10.
 264. poetry env list --full-path
 265. poetry run pip list
 266.

 267.
Note that
poetry show
describes the abstract lock file rather than your
 268. on-disk environment. With that said,
poetry show --tree
can sometimes be
 269. useful.

 270.
...add a new dependency?

 271.
Either:

 272.

 273.
manually update
pyproject.toml
; then
poetry lock --no-update
; or else

 274.

poetry add packagename
. See
poetry add --help
; note the
--dev
,
 275.
--extras
and
--optional
flags in particular.
 276.

 277.
NB: this specifies the new package with a version given by a "caret bound". This won't get forced to its lowest version in the old deps CI job: see this TODO.

 278.

 279.

 280.

 281.
Include the updated
pyproject.toml
and
poetry.lock
files in your commit.

 282.
...remove a dependency?

 283.
This is not done often and is untested, but

 284.

poetry remove packagename
 285.

 286.
ought to do the trick. Alternatively, manually update
pyproject.toml
and
 287.
poetry lock --no-update
. Include the updated
pyproject.toml
and poetry.lock`
 288. files in your commit.

 289.
...update the version range for an existing dependency?

 290.
Best done by manually editing
pyproject.toml
, then
poetry lock --no-update
.
 291. Include the updated
pyproject.toml
and
poetry.lock
in your commit.

 292.
...update a dependency in the locked environment?

 293.
Use

 294.

poetry update packagename
 295.

 296.
to use the latest version of
packagename
in the locked environment, without
 297. affecting the broad dependencies listed in the wheel.

 298.
There doesn't seem to be a way to do this whilst locking a specific version of
 299.
packagename
. We can workaround this (crudely) as follows:

 300.

poetry add packagename==1.2.3
 301. # This should update pyproject.lock.
 302. # Now undo the changes to pyproject.toml. For example
 303. # git restore pyproject.toml
 304. # Get poetry to recompute the content-hash of pyproject.toml without changing
 305. # the locked package versions.
 306. poetry lock --no-update
 307.

 308.
Either way, include the updated
poetry.lock
file in your commit.

 309.
...export a
requirements.txt
file?

 310.

poetry export --extras all
 311.

 312.
Be wary of bugs in
poetry export
and
pip install -r requirements.txt
.

 313.
Note:
poetry export
will be made a plugin in Poetry 1.2. Additional config may
 314. be required.

 315.
...build a test wheel?

 316.
I usually use

 317.

poetry run pip install build && poetry run python -m build
 318.

 319.
because
build
is a standardish tool which

 324.
At the time of writing, the 1.2 series is beta only. We have seen some examples
 325. where the lockfiles generated by 1.2 prereleasese aren't interpreted correctly
 326. by poetry 1.1.x. For now, use poetry 1.1.14, which includes a critical
 327. change needed to remain
 328. compatible with PyPI.

 329.
It can also be useful to check the version of
poetry-core
in use. If you've
 330. installed
poetry
with
pipx
, try
pipx runpip poetry list | grep poetry-core
.

 331.
Clear caches:
poetry cache clear --all pypi
.

 332.
Poetry caches a bunch of information about packages that isn't readily available
 333. from PyPI. (This is what makes poetry seem slow when doing the first
 334.
poetry install
.) Try
poetry cache list
and
poetry cache clear --all <name of cache>
to see if that fixes things.

 335.
Try
--verbose
or
--dry-run
arguments.
