On wrt1900ac 1.5.6 (and every previous version tried) updating succeeds in the gui but then no packages ever show up. Installed or not.

opkg on command line does list packages and they can be installed etc.

Changing configuration from gui by adding or removing a source sometimes makes the installed packages show up.

This wrt1900ac doesn’t have the WiFi cards replaced. (I don’t use WiFi on it) Mentioning in case it breaks something I don’t know about.

Serial console works.

Willing to try any proposed fixes with some guidance.
