  1. ANTIWORD(1) Linux User's Manual ANTIWORD(1)
  2. NAME
  3. antiword - show the text and images of MS Word documents
  4. SYNOPSIS
  5. antiword [ options ] wordfiles
  6. DESCRIPTION
  7. Antiword is an application that displays the text and the
  8. images of Microsoft Word documents.
  9. A wordfile named - stands for a Word document read from
  10. the standard input.
  11. Only documents made by MS Word version 2 and version 6 or
  12. later are supported.
  13. OPTIONS
  14. -h Give a help message.
  15. -i image level
  16. The image level determines how images will be
  17. shown.
  18. 0: Use non-standard extensions from Ghostscript.
  19. This output may not print on any PostScript
  20. printer, but is useful in case no hard copy is
  21. needed. It is also useful when Ghostscript is
  22. used as a filter to print a PostScript file to a
  23. non-PostScript printer.
  24. 1: Show no images.
  25. 2: PostScript level 2 compatible. (default)
  26. 3: PostScript level 3 compatible. (EXPERIMENTAL,
  27. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) images are not
  28. printed correctly)
  29. -m mapping file
  30. This file is used to map Unicode characters to your
  31. local character set. The default is UTF-8.txt in
  32. locales that support UTF-8 and 8859-1.txt in other
  33. locales.
  34. -p papersize
  35. Output in PostScript form. Printable on paper of
  36. the specified size: 10x14, a3, a4, a5, b4, b5,
  37. executive, folio, legal, letter, note, quarto,
  38. statement or tabloid.
  39. -s Include text with the so-called "hidden text"
  40. attribute.
  41. -t Output in text form. (default)
  42. -w width
  43. In text mode this is the line width in characters.
  44. A value of zero puts an entire paragraph on a line,
  45. useful when the text is to used as input for
  46. another wordprocessor. This value is ignored in
  47. PostScript mode.
  48. -x document type definition
  49. Output in XML form. Currently the only document
  50. type definition is db (for DocBook).
  51. -L In PostScript mode: use landscape mode.
  52. FILES
  53. Mapping files like 8859-1.txt
  54. Antiword looks for its mapping files in three
  55. directories, in the order given:
  56. (1) The directory specified by $ANTIWORDHOME
  57. (2) The directory specified by $HOME/.antiword
  58. (3) Directory /usr/share/antiword
  59. The fontnames file
  60. Antiword will look for its fontname file in the
  61. same directories as used for the mapping files.
  62. The fontnames file contains the translation table
  63. from font names used by MS Word to font names used
  64. by PostScript.
  65. NOTE:
  66. Antiword cannot tell the difference between a file
  67. that does not exist and a file that cannot be
  68. opened for reading.
  69. ENVIRONMENT
  70. Antiword uses the environment variable ``ANTIWORDHOME'' as
  71. the first directory to look for its files. Antiword uses
  72. the environment variable ``HOME'' to find the user's home
  73. directory. When in text mode it uses the variable
  74. ``COLUMNS'' to set the width of the output (unless over-
  75. ridden by the -w option).
  76. BUGS
  77. Antiword is far from complete. Many features are still
  78. missing. Many images are not shown yet. Some of the images
  79. that are shown, are shown in the wrong place. PostScript
  80. output is only available in ISO 8859-1 and ISO 8859-2.
